Mumbai – The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance has stormed to a decisive victory in Maharashtra’s municipal corporation elections, leading in 24 of the 29 civic bodies that went to polls. The results mark a significant consolidation of power for the ruling alliance, which had already secured a strong mandate in the state assembly elections just months ago.

Early Results Point to Mahayuti Dominance

As counting continues across the state, the trends are unmistakable. The Mahayuti alliance – comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) – has surged ahead with over 600 seats, while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has managed to lead in just 74 seats.

In Mumbai’s prestigious Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), eight wards have declared winners so far. The Shiv Sena has claimed four seats, BJP three, and Congress two – including a significant win in the Dharavi ward, where Congress candidate Asha Kale emerged victorious.

“We have always delivered for the people,” remarked a Union minister as the BJP surged ahead in Pune, one of the state’s key urban centers.

Key Battlegrounds Show Shifting Political Landscape

The elections have revealed interesting patterns across Maharashtra’s major cities:

Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad: The BJP is ahead in five seats in Pune and four in Pimpri-Chinchwad, suggesting that the much-anticipated Pawar family reunion – with Sharad Pawar and nephew Ajit Pawar contesting from opposite sides – hasn’t translated into electoral success for the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction). A former Pune mayor who recently switched from NCP (SP) to Congress is reportedly trailing by 400 votes.

Vasai-Virar: In a surprising turn of events, the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi initially led in this satellite city, but the BJP has now surged ahead with an edge on 25 seats, demonstrating the alliance’s ability to recover ground even in closely contested areas.

BMC Mumbai: The contest between BJP and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena faction remains tight in several wards. The Uddhav Sena candidate is leading in Byculla, while the party holds an edge on 56 seats overall in the BMC. However, Mahayuti maintains an overall lead in India’s richest municipal corporation.

Kolhapur: BJP’s Pratap Dattatray Patil has claimed victory, with supporters already celebrating in the streets.

Latur: The BJP has secured four seats in this Marathwada city, demonstrating the party’s expanding footprint beyond its traditional urban strongholds.

Controversies Mar Otherwise Smooth Polling

The elections weren’t without their share of drama. Allegations of “erasable ink” surfaced on polling day, with voters claiming they could wipe off the ink mark using hand sanitizer. Uddhav Thackeray was quick to raise concerns, suggesting collusion between the Election Commission and the ruling party.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi joined the chorus, accusing the Election Commission of “gaslighting citizens” over the ink controversy.

Adding to the tension, a Maharashtra minister alleged that 100 police personnel lathi-charged Shiv Sena workers in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, though details remain sketchy.

What These Results Mean

The civic elections come at a crucial time for Maharashtra’s political landscape. The state saw intense campaigning, with former rivals coming together and long-time allies parting ways.

The Thackeray cousins – Raj and Uddhav – who ended their decades-long rivalry last June, contested together for the first time. Meanwhile, the Pawar family’s split played out in full public view in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had confidently predicted that Mahayuti would win 26 of the 29 civic bodies. Current trends suggest he wasn’t far off the mark.

By The Numbers

Maharashtra’s 2,869 seats across 893 wards went to polls on January 15. Voter turnout ranged between 46-50% across the state, with Kolhapur recording the highest at 50.85% by mid-afternoon. Mumbai’s BMC saw a more modest turnout of 41%.

Several Bollywood celebrities, including Ranbir Kapoor, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan, were spotted at polling stations in Mumbai, lending star power to the democratic exercise.

Exit polls had already predicted a clean sweep for Mahayuti in the BMC polls, with projections suggesting the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance would win 131-151 seats out of the corporation’s total seats.

Looking Ahead

The results underscore the BJP-led alliance’s dominance in Maharashtra politics. Coming on the heels of their assembly election victory, this civic poll success gives Mahayuti control over crucial urban local bodies, which will be instrumental in implementing development projects and welfare schemes.

For the MVA, these results pose serious questions about their strategy and appeal in urban areas. The opposition will need to regroup and reassess their approach as they look toward future electoral battles.

As Maharashtra minister pointed out during the campaign, voters in cities like Mumbai are looking for “pothole-free” roads and better infrastructure. The election results suggest they’re willing to give the ruling alliance a chance to deliver on those promises.
